Gym membership?

If you're looking to just get in shape, make some gains so you look good for the beach then I see no reason whatsoever to spend a lot of money on a gym membership. The only investment I'd advise would be some weights, dumbbells and a bar that you can add weights to yourself. It shouldn't set you back much and in a couple of months you'd make up what you'd have spent at a gym.

On the other hand if you're looking to become a bodybuilder or you're interested in picking up a martial art then I would indeed recommend a gym. It's got a large selection of equipment, most gyms tend to have fighting equipment (gloves, bracers, pads, punchbags) and you'll be able to find sparring partners.

Unless you're in a serious need for somebody to push you to your limit then I wouldn't bother chipping in for a personal trainer. A lot of them will just fill you with broscience and make you use all the machines that they lay their eyes on at that particular moment.

Hopefully you can take some of this advice on board and make some savings as well as achieve your fitness goals.

  2. Good advice. My gym is very cheap but I never compared it with the material that I can buy myself. Will have to see what's eventually cheaper.

  8. Easily solved, just go a job around the streets. I find it best to go for a run in the mornings when it's quiet and it tends to leave me feeling more energetic during the day as long as I don't overexert myself.

  10. solid advice, i've had a gym mebership for the last couple years and it has improved my fitness tremendously; however it's definitely not required to get lean and healthy

  11. My mom goes to the gym to use the treadmill and do workouts that you can do on your own like sit ups and push ups. its such a waste of money imo. but I agree that if you are serious about it, its worth the membership.

  14. If a gym works for you keep it up, I'm personally a member of a gym mainly due to martial arts classes I get in the package.

Don't take this blog post the wrong way, gyms are great but in the long run they're not cost effective. I'm definitely not saying to abandon a gym if you're happy there, I'm just trying to provide alternative methods which still produce results.

  21. Me and my friends are planning on going to the gym for the summer, we know it's not the best choice but we're still doing it.

  22. Good advice, I've joined a gym recently myself. I did it mainly out of convenience and the commodities offered there. I can relax in a sauna or whirlpool or swim around in a big indoor pool after good session, so I think it was worth it getting a membership.

  29. My only problem is I don't have space for a bar anywhere in my house. I also don't know where a gym is so that doesn't help.
